Is the minimum wage applicable to pet sitters in Germany?

If you're considering working as a pet sitter and wondering if the minimum wage applies to you, it depends on whether your relationship with the pet owner is classified as dependent employment or self-employment.

If your contractual relationship with the pet owner is classified as an employment relationship, the Minimum Wage Act applies. The statutory minimum wage is currently €12.41 gross per hour and will increase to €12.82 as of January 1, 2025.

In an employment relationship, the pet owner must register you with the Mini Job Center (or with the health insurance if you exceed the earnings limit of €538 per month) and pay flat-rate contributions/social security contributions.

However, these regulations do not apply to self-employment. As a self-employed pet sitter, you can set your wage individually or negotiate it with the pet owner.

If you have any doubts or questions, you should contact the Minijob Center.

If you're still unsure whether your relationship with the pet owner is considered dependent employment (employment relationship) or self-employment (freelance contract), here are guidelines that can help you distinguish between being an employee or self-employed.
